Claude Code Plans: Which One Should You Pick in 2026?

How many Claude Code plans are there actually?

There are five Claude Code plans in 2026 (Free, Pro, Max, Teams, Enterprise) plus the API as a separate path for automation. Picking the right one is not about price, it is about workload. The most common mistakes are staying on Pro past the point of usefulness and jumping to Enterprise before the team is ready for it.

This guide is a Claude Code plans picker. It walks through the actual capabilities and usage limits of each plan, the break-even points where upgrading pays for itself, and the decision tree most developers should follow. If you want the deeper pricing breakdown rather than the picker, our Claude Code pricing breakdown covers the math; if you want the broader Anthropic ecosystem, our Claude pricing explained guide covers all the consumer plans.

Free: $0

The Free plan exists for evaluation, not for daily work.

You get Claude Code terminal access plus the web and mobile apps, drawing from a shared usage pool capped at roughly daily message volume rather than tokens. You can use Sonnet, run Claude Code commands, write code, and explore the system. You do not get priority routing, do not get unlimited projects, and the daily cap will frustrate any real coding session inside an hour.

Free is genuinely useful for one thing: trying Claude Code before paying. Most users spend a day or two on Free, hit the cap, and upgrade to Pro. Anyone using Free as their daily driver is leaving productivity on the table.

Pro: $20 per month

The mainstream individual plan. $17 per month if you pay annually, $20 monthly.

Pro adds Claude Code terminal access without the daily-cap of Free, plus Cowork, Research, unlimited projects, and the desktop extensions. Claude Code on Pro uses Sonnet by default with about 10-40 prompts per 5-hour rolling window and roughly 44,000 tokens of headroom per window.

What Pro fits: developers using Claude Code for 1-2 hours a day. Solo founders shipping a side project, anyone alternating between Claude and other AI tools, students. Pro is also the right starting point for teams evaluating whether the deeper plans are worth it.

What Pro does not fit: any day where you sit in Claude Code for more than 90 minutes of dense work. The 5-hour window will close on you. Either you wait 30-60 minutes, or you are losing flow state. If this happens once a week, Pro is fine. Three times a week, you are on the wrong plan.

Max: $100 or $200 per month

Two flavours: $100/month gives 5x the Pro usage; $200/month gives 20x. Both add priority routing during peak demand and access to Opus on-tap.

Max 5x ($100) is the right plan for developers using Claude Code as a primary tool. The math is simple: if you spend more than 30 minutes a week waiting for the Pro window to roll forward, the $80 upgrade pays for itself. Most engineers cross that threshold in their first month of serious Claude Code use.

Max 20x ($200) makes sense for two cases: developers running parallel sessions (one for refactoring, one for new features, one for code review) or developers also using Claude heavily for non-coding work in the same account. For everyone else, the 5x tier is the better economic choice.

Max is where most paid Claudify users sit. For the deeper breakdown of what 5x and 20x actually feel like in practice, see our Claude Code Max plan guide.

Teams: $20 to $125 per seat

Teams plans are billed per seat, with two seat types and a 5-seat minimum.

Standard seat at $20/month annual or $25/month: slightly higher allocation than Pro plus team admin features (SSO, audit logs, shared billing). Best for teams of 3-10 where most developers use Claude Code lightly.

Premium seat at $100/month annual or $125/month: 5x the standard seat allocation, equivalent to giving each developer a Max-tier individual experience. This is the seat type for teams where Claude Code is a primary engineering tool.

The break-even analysis: if your team has 4+ developers using Claude Code regularly, Teams Premium beats giving each one an individual Max subscription because you get centralised billing, no-train-by-default privacy, SSO, and admin controls bundled in. Below 4 developers, individual Max subscriptions are cheaper but lose the admin layer.

A common pattern that works well: mix the seat types. Power users on Premium ($100), occasional users on Standard ($20). The shared admin and billing make this trivial to manage.

Enterprise: $20 per seat plus usage at API rates

Enterprise is structured fundamentally differently from the other plans. The flat $20 per user per month covers the platform features (admin tools, SSO, SCIM, audit logs, the compliance API, optional HIPAA-ready setup). Actual model usage is metered at API rates and added on top.

This works for organisations where usage varies wildly by user. A 200-person company where 30 people use Claude heavily and 170 use it lightly will spend less on Enterprise than on giving everyone Premium Teams seats, because the heavy users are billed for what they actually consume rather than paying for unused headroom.

Enterprise also unlocks compliance features that the smaller plans do not: SCIM provisioning, the audit log feed for SIEM integration, spend controls per organisational unit, and the HIPAA-ready setup for regulated industries. If your security team requires any of these, the conversation starts at Enterprise regardless of headcount.

For Enterprise pricing at any volume, you contact Anthropic sales. The list price is published, the negotiated rate at scale is not.

Plan picker decision tree

A practical flowchart, in order:

Your situation Pick this plan
Trying Claude Code for the first time Free
Solo, 1-2 hours/day in Claude Code Pro
Solo, 3+ hours/day in Claude Code Max 5x ($100)
Solo, multiple parallel Claude Code sessions Max 20x ($200)
Team of 3-10 developers, all using daily Teams Premium
Team of 3-10 with mixed usage Teams (mix Standard + Premium)
50+ devs, compliance requirements Enterprise
Building automation, scripts, CI/CD API (separate)

Two refinements:

If you are on Pro and hit the rate limit twice a month, stay on Pro. If you hit it once a week, upgrade to Max immediately. The math always favours the upgrade past that threshold.

If you are on Max 5x and hit the rate limit twice a month, you are using Claude Code well. If you hit it once a week, look at Max 20x or split your usage across multiple accounts (each Max subscription is per email).

Break-even analysis

Three scenarios where the upgrade pays for itself based on a $50/hour developer rate (adjust for your own):

Pro to Max 5x ($80/month upgrade):

  • Pays for itself if it saves you 96 minutes of waiting per month
  • Roughly 1 saved 30-minute window per week
  • Most daily Claude Code users cross this in their second week

Max 5x to Max 20x ($100/month upgrade):

  • Pays for itself if it saves you 120 minutes of friction per month
  • Need to be running multi-session workflows or hitting the 5x cap weekly
  • Less common; only ~30% of Max users need this tier

Individual Max to Teams Premium for 5+ devs (~zero per-dev cost change):

  • Same per-dev price, you gain admin features
  • Pays for itself the first time you onboard or offboard a developer cleanly
  • The privacy posture (no-train-by-default) is also worth it for any team with confidential code

What plans do not solve

Three problems plan upgrades will not fix:

Bloated CLAUDE.md eating your context budget. The biggest source of "running out of tokens" is not the plan, it is configuration. A 10K-token CLAUDE.md hits Pro and Max alike. Trim it.

Untrimmed conversation history. Long sessions accumulate context. The token cost climbs with every turn. Memory systems and custom agents help; throwing money at upgrades does not.

No agent definitions. Without explicit subagent role definitions, every task burns the same model tier. A properly-configured Claudify install can run on Pro and outperform a vanilla install on Max because the architecture handles the routing.

This is the leverage layer where Claudify lives. Skills, memory, agents, and audit hooks turn any plan into a high-leverage one.

Plan switching mechanics

Three operational notes that catch people:

Switching mid-cycle. Anthropic prorates upgrades but you may need to manually trigger the switch in account settings. Do not assume the system upgrades you at the start of a new month.

Annual versus monthly. The annual discount is real (around 15% off), but lock-in is real too. If you might need to switch tiers within a year, the monthly billing is cheaper in expected value. Most people stay on whatever tier they pick anyway.

Multiple subscriptions per account. You cannot stack subscriptions on one email. If you want both Max for personal use and Enterprise for work, you need two accounts. Most teams handle this by giving each developer a Teams seat and letting them keep a personal Pro on the side.

Next steps

Picking the right plan is necessary but not sufficient. The high-leverage move is configuring your Claude Code setup so the plan you have actually delivers. That is where Claudify earns its place.
